Essential Questions

The 3 Essential Questions that I chose:
1) How does the elderly be an disadvantage/advantage to the human society?
2) What can we do to make the elderly feel like they are part of the human society?
3) How can I engage to the elderly more so that they will not feel so bored?

I chose these as my TOP 3 Essential Questions because I find these questions very interesting. It also helps the elderly quite alot as it would help them to find life more meaningful for them. This will also make their brains more 'active' and this might make them live longer. We can also know that the elderly might be an advantage to the human society but it might also be a disadvantage to the human society. Engaging them will also make them feel more energetic so that they will not be so bored.

This is the reason of why I chose this 3 Essential Question.

Elderly Challenge - Observation 4

I discovered that some or maybe most of the elderly likes watching television programmes. Watching television programmes is actually also very good for them as they will not feel bored when watching television programmes at home but watching too much of it is also bad for their eye. I think that they should consider taking a short 5 minutes break every 15 to 20 minutes to rest their eyes, so that they will not spoil their eyes.

Elderly Challenge - Observation 3

I noticed that quite a number of elderly likes reading. Reading is very good for elderly as this is a chance for them to so called 'upgrade' themselves and know more about the surroundings now as there is alot of difference from the 1990's and the 2000's. By reading, not only elderly, but also us can upgrade ourself to now more about what is happening in the world.

Understanding "The Elderly Challenge"

Explain in your own words, the FOUR key recommendations of the report.

1. Housing for Seniors
- There would be different housing options to meet the needs of the elders. The housing options have elderly-friendly features for them to remain independent. It might also help to bring the seniors closer to their families and Singapore will be the best home for all age.

2. Accessibility for Seniors
- Transportation and buildings are amended to be elderly-friendly. Transportation should also not be a problem for the elderly to continue their daily life.

3. Caring for Seniors
- Eldercare and healthcare services would be easily accessible, efficient and affordable, ensuring the dignity and quality of life of the elderly are maintained.

4. Opportunities for Seniors
- There would be some activities organised by community clubs to let the elderly to have an active lifestyle, They would also have more time to spend with their families making Singaporeans, both young and old, to have positive attitudes towards the elderly.

State ONE way that the CAI report is recommending to make our public housing more elderly-friendly

-They could vary the length of land leases as shorter land leases will facilitate the development of retirement housing by the private sector.

- State TWO ways on how we can ensure that the quality of elderly care here in Singapore is affordable

1. Top up the Medisave accounts of less well-of Singaporeans when there are budget surpluses that the government that the Government can share with the people.
2.Family physicians should play an important role in the management of healthcare needs for seniors.

- After reading the CAI report, what do you are the THREE things that you can do, as an SST student, to help overcome these elderly challenges

1. I could start by caring the seniors in or near my home if they need help with any tasks and i can also develop a positive mindset towards the elderly.

2. I could also think of ways to improve facilities and accessibility of certain areas so that the elderly and the disabled will have no difficulties to continue with their daily life.

3. I could also organise some activities that will requires the entire family to participate so that the family can bond and they will have time to spend with each other doing things that they would like to do.

Elderly Challenge - Observation 2

I observed that some elderly likes climbing the stairs as their daily exercise routine, but the only problem is that it could be quite dangerous for an elderly to climb the stairs everyday. If one day they fall (touch wood) , they might break their leg bones and as they are elderly, their bones may not grow like how teenagers do, they will feel very weak. I think that they could actually do some other simple exercises that could be part of their daily routine, for example, going for a slow jog in the park or things like that. This will also be safer for them and they can also exercise to keep fit. But remember, they MUST do their WARM-UP before they begin any exercise.

Elderly Challenge - Observation 1

I found out that some elderly usually like to do things their own way even when there are simpler ways to do something as they are used to doing things like how they do years back. For example how they skin apples. Now, there are easier ways to skin the apple, but many years ago, they do not have proper tools to skin the apples so they used small, sharp knifes to skin them. They should actually use the proper tools that was invented just few years ago as it is 10 times safer than how they skin the apples using small, sharp knifes.

Personal Reflection (NEWater visit)

Hi, this is Si Yuan here .
From this NEWater Plant visit, I have learnt at least 3 things:
1) Water is very difficult to get and ,
2) If we do not conserve water , we may lose our water supply and ,
3) We must be less choosy and learn how to appreciate what we have now and continue to save Gaia .

Also, I have learnt 2 concept from today's visit:
1) In order to make sewage water clean and safe enough to drink, it has to pass through two stages: the ultrafiltration and the micro-filtration. After it passes through those stages , the water is safe enough to drink .
2) To ensure that the water is clean, it goes through the ultra-violet treatment to kill all other bacteria from the water , but the problem is that if the is any dead bacteria that passes through the ultra-violet treatment , the dead bacteria would still be in the water so this treatment is just done to ensure the people that the water is very safe .

1 interesting thing that I have learnt today from the trip would be that the ultra-violet treatment was actually the cheapest item that they have in the factory! I thought that the ultra-violet treatment would be very expensive but to my surprise it is not !

As a student in Singapore, I can save the amount of water that I use everyday. Also, I can reuse the water that were used to mop to water the plants . I can also come out with a keynote presentation on saving water and go to primary schools for talks and tell them that saving water is very important .

That's all that I have to say for now . See you next time!
